BMW M1 – The First True M-Car

The BMW M1 (E26) is a legend born from racing dreams. Designed in the late ‘70s as a Group 4 and Group 5 race car, it became BMW’s first and only mid-engine supercar. Its sharp, wedge-shaped design, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, gave it an exotic look that rivaled Ferrari and Lamborghini.

At its heart, the M1 packed a 3.5L inline-6 (M88), producing 277 hp and 330 Nm in road-going form. With a 5-speed manual gearbox, it sprinted from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and reached a top speed of 262 km/h. Weighing 1,300 kg, it delivered razor-sharp handling, making it one of the best driver’s cars of its time.

Despite its racing pedigree and limited production (453 units), the M1 never got the motorsport glory it deserved due to rule changes killing BMW’s racing program. However, its M88 engine later powered legends like the E28 M5 and E24 M635 CSi, cementing its legacy as the godfather of BMW M cars.

For those who crave pure driving engagement, timeless design, and an untold motorsport story, the BMW M1 isn’t just a car—it’s the genesis of BMW M.
