Ferrari 288 GTO – The Birth of a Supercar Legend

Before the F40, there was the Ferrari 288 GTO, the first true Ferrari supercar, originally designed for Group B racing. Powered by a 2.9L twin-turbocharged V8, it unleashed 400 hp and 496 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. With a weight of just 1,160 kg, it sprinted from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, reaching a staggering 305 km/h—making it the first road car to exceed 300 km/h.

Its design, based on the Ferrari 308, was radically reworked with wider fenders, massive air intakes, and lightweight composite materials. Built for racing but never competing due to Group B’s cancellation, the 288 GTO became a road-going legend, produced in just 272 units.
